First Aid at Work training in Derby

Course overview

Our First Aid at Work (FAW) course is the full workplace first aid qualification — the standard of cover that most medium and higher-risk workplaces are required to have in place. Accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB), it gives your nominated first aiders the skills and confidence to deal with everything from a minor injury to a life-threatening emergency.

The course is delivered in a flexible blended format. You complete around 6 hours of user-friendly e-learning in your own time, then attend 2 days of hands-on practical training in Derby. This approach lets you fit the qualification around a busy working week while still getting plenty of supervised practice on the skills that matter most. The course runs over 3 days in total.

It is designed for those working in medium to higher-risk environments such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing and hospitality. Employers can use their First Aid Needs Assessment to decide whether full First Aid at Work cover is required, or whether the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course is more appropriate.

What the course covers

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider
  • Assess an incident safely and carry out a primary survey
  • Perform CPR and use an AED (defibrillator) with confidence
  • Place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position
  • Manage choking in adults
  • Control external bleeding, dress wounds and treat for shock
  • Treat burns, scalds, fractures, sprains and strains
  • Respond to head and spinal injuries
  • Recognise and manage seizures and epilepsy
  • Treat anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions
  • Respond to heart attack, angina and chest pain
  • Recognise and respond to stroke, asthma and diabetic emergencies
  • Manage incidents and keep records in line with RIDDOR
  • Apply good hygiene, infection control and use of first aid equipment

Who is this course for?

This course suits anyone an employer has identified as needing full first aid cover, including designated and appointed workplace first aiders, site supervisors and managers in higher-risk industries, and facilities, warehouse and production staff. It is particularly well suited to medium and higher-risk settings such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing and hospitality.

No previous first aid experience or qualifications are needed — we start from the basics and build every skill from the ground up. If you are not sure whether your team needs the full First Aid at Work course or the shorter Emergency First Aid at Work course, call us on 01332 473 330 and we will help you decide based on your workplace.

Assessment & certification

There is no daunting written exam to revise for. You are assessed continuously by your trainer throughout the practical sessions, alongside short knowledge questions, so the focus stays on building real, usable skills. In the unlikely event that you do not pass first time, we will arrange additional support and a re-assessment. On successful completion you will receive the FAIB-accredited First Aid at Work certificate, which is valid for 3 years. Before it expires, a FAW Refresher course renews it for a further three years.

        FAQs

First Aid at Work — frequently asked questions

Who is this course suitable for?

The First Aid at Work course is ideal for people working in medium to higher-risk workplaces, such as construction sites, manufacturing, warehouses, hospitality and larger offices. It suits anyone an employer has identified as needing full first aid cover.

Do I need a Level 3 (RQF) First Aid at Work qualification, or is the FAIB-accredited course enough?

The FAIB-accredited First Aid at Work (FAW) course is enough for the vast majority of employers and meets the HSE's requirements for higher-risk workplaces in full. Many people assume they need the Ofqual-regulated 'Level 3' (RQF) version, but the HSE accepts FAIB-accredited and regulated RQF First Aid at Work courses on an equal footing — both qualify your staff as workplace first aiders. The right level of cover is set by your First Aid Needs Assessment, not by whether the course is FAIB-accredited or RQF-regulated. If your organisation's policy specifically asks for the regulated RQF certificate, let us know and we can provide it.

Do I need any previous first aid experience?

No. The course is designed for complete beginners and builds every skill from the ground up, so no prior first aid experience or qualifications are required.

How long is the course and how is it structured?

It is a blended course running over 3 days in total. You complete around 6 hours of e-learning before the practical training, then attend 2 days of hands-on sessions in Derby.

        Is there an assessment?

Yes. You are assessed continuously by your trainer throughout the practical sessions, along with short knowledge questions. There is no formal written exam, and almost everyone passes.

What certificate will I receive and how long is it valid?

On successful completion you will receive an FAIB-accredited First Aid at Work certificate. It is valid for 3 years, after which a FAW Refresher renews it for a further three years.

What should I bring to the course?

You do not need to bring any materials — everything is provided. Just complete the e-learning beforehand and come ready to take part in the practical sessions.

How much does the course cost?

Public course places are £195 per person. We also offer group on-site training for up to 12 people at your own premises from £395, which is usually more cost-effective for teams.

Can this course be delivered on-site for my team?

Yes. We can deliver the full course on-site at your premises in Derby for groups of up to 12 learners from £395. We bring all the equipment — you just provide a room. Call us for a group quote.

What is the difference between First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work?

First Aid at Work is the more comprehensive blended qualification for medium and higher-risk workplaces and covers a much wider range of injuries and conditions. Emergency First Aid at Work is a one-day course designed for lower-risk workplaces such as offices and shops.

What if I have specific medical needs, disabilities or learning-support requirements?

We are committed to making our courses accessible to everyone. Let us know about any accessibility or learning-support needs in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you.
